Maharaja or maharao is a title of imperial rank in India, Pakistan and Nepal equivalent to an emperor, sovereign prince or king. The word "maharaja" literally means "great king". In fact, it signifies more power than "khan" or King as it always has association with ruling over large parts of India with vast riches and resources. In the movie Maharaja, R.D. Bineay stars as a Maharaja of modern India. He has been in pursuit of a diamond possessed by his long-lost grandmother for his entire life. After finally getting the diamond, he learns that it is to be used for a royal wedding and he has five days to hand it over to his father before he marries another woman guaranteed not to have any claim on the family wealth or the throne. The movie was released in several languages. The Hindi name is 'Maharaja', while the Tamil name is 'Thirudaandi'. The DVD version's subtitle is 'Thirudaandi' instead of 'Maharaja'.This film was screened in the USA at the Asian American Film Festival, New York, NY on 11 June 2006. The screening also included a Q&A with Director R.D Bineay to discuss how this film reflects Indian society today and how it relates to his previous films, most notably "Mango Dreams" (2004). A review of the film appeared in "Screen International", March 2007, which focused on the complexity of the characters of Vibhu and Raja.The soundtrack of new age music was recorded by 13 musicians & singers, including Jatin Lalit & Nisha Kapoor. The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Although the lyrics were largely in Hindi, there are some Tamil songs on the album. The song "Maharaja" is used as an end credit (theme) for all English versions (CD version and DVD version) of the movie on all versions/regions except India (where it is replaced by "Thirudaandi"). The movie was nominated for the 2005 Asia Pacific Screen Awards.The film won the following awards:It was named as the Best Movie in International Film Festival of India, where it also won a Special Jury Award.R.D Bineay's "Maharaja" was nominated for the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, 2005 where it won a Special Jury Award.The soundtrack album of this film sold more than 25,000 copies and reached Gold status within one month of its release.
